And the Award Goes to…

The NFL award race is on

The NFL awards ceremony is starting soon, where all the top athletes gather to one venue to see who wins the top awards in the league. This ceremony has some of the most decorated awards in NFL. Fans and players get to see who the top player is in the league, who is the best offences and defensive player, who is the best coach and many other awards that showcase talented football players. With the ceremony being less than a month away, there’s much anticipation about which players will win the awards.

Awards are a big part of sports, and athletes in all kinds of sports race to get different achievements and awards. For some athletes, their goal is a certain award like MVP. (TJ Culpepper)

The main award that is given out in the NFL is the most Valuable Player and is given to the best player from that season. There have been many Hall of Famer’s that have taken MVP award home with them. Peyton Manning has the most MVPs with five. This season, the front runners for the MVP award are quarterback Lamar Jackson, quarterback Brock Purdy and quarterback Dak Prescott.

Jackson, who is the starting quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, has had a tremendous year posting 3,678 passing yards, with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the Ravens to a 13 and three record.

Purdy has also had a good year of throwing, having 4,280 yards, with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also helped the 49ers have a 12 and five record and have the first seed in the NFC for the playoffs.

Prescott has had a very nice bounce back season. This year, Prescott has 4516 passing yards, and leads the league in touchdowns with 36, while only having nine interceptions. He also led the Dallas Cowboys to a 12 and five record but, unfortunately, lost in the first round to the Green Bay Packers.

The offensive player of the year award given to the top offensive player of the season. This year, the consensus pick is running back Christian McCaffrey who plays for the 49ers. McCaffrey leads the league in rushing yards with 1459 and has 14 touchdowns on the season. Many students also see Christian McCaffrey as their favourite offensive player this year.

“I think Christian McCaffrey has that award locked up, no one else is even close to taking it from him,” said freshman Jeremiah Dutchover.

The defensive player of the year award is the race between two of the best pass rushers in the National Football League. Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns is at the top of the list. Garrett had an outstanding season posting 14 sacks and causing five fumbles.

Next would be TJ Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Watt has won the defensive player of the year award in the past, but his numbers this season could win him another. He has had a league leading 19 sacks and four forced fumbles.

The last main award on this list is the coach of the year, the Browns’ head coach Kevin Stefanski leading the polls by a large number.

According to sportsbettingdime.com, “Kevin Stefanski, who won NFL COY in 2020, is the favorite to win 2023-24 NFL Coach of the Year with -950 odds. Stefanski has the Browns looking like contenders this season in spite of being on his fourth starting QB.”

He has the best odds to winning his second COY with his tenure with the Cleveland Browns.

Every player that plays in the National Football League has talent, but these listed players and coaches have shown over the course of the season that they are a level above.
