Although the Christmas season is over, a lot of people continue celebrating the holiday by leaving their decorations up through January. To keep the spirit of Christmas alive for just a little longer, people often continue to listen to Christmas music in the new year.
There are many different types of Christmas music, spanning many years and various musical genres. Because of this, many people wonder which is truly better: old or new Christmas music.
“I prefer older Christmas music, and my favorite old Christmas song is ‘Silent Night’,” said junior Elise Oillic. “Older Christmas songs make me feel more nostalgic for the Christmas season.” Newer Christmas songs don’t bring the same warm holiday feeling that the old ones do. That’s why many students seem to prefer older tunes.
“I like old Christmas music better,” said junior Faith Petersen. “The newer songs don’t focus on the real meaning of Christmas as much as the older ones.” Petersen likes listening to Christmas music that reflects what the holiday means to her, and that means listening to classic songs.
“My favorite Christmas song is either ‘Silent Night’ or ‘O Holy Night,’” Petersen said. These are two classic Christmas songs that invoke a sense of comfort and peace in listeners that new Christmas songs don’t.
Old Christmas music seems to be most popular at Eagle High. However, it doesn’t really matter what type of Christmas music one listens to as long as they are celebrating the season with those they love and remembering the true meaning of the holiday.
