February often marks the start of Districts, then State for Idaho girls’ basketball. This is especially exciting for the Eagle High girls’ team this year, as they have emerged as one of the strongest and most dominant teams in Idaho this season.
The team is made up of all upperclassmen. Team captains include senior guards Trinity Holsinger and Bella Thompson. The third team captain is senior forward Peyten Taylor. Taylor is injured and out for the season but has still been able to stick by her team and be a leader to her teammates.
“It has been bittersweet to watch and not be able to play the sport that I love, but the advice I have been able to give and the different perspectives that I have been able to bring to the team have made me a better leader,” said Taylor.
Before Districts, the team put together an impressive record of 13 wins and two losses through the regular season. The Mustangs took on the Ridgeview Warhawks during one of the last games of the season. Eagle High started hot from the beginning with lockdown defense from junior guard Ryann Ellsworth and elite shooting from behind the arc from senior guard Trinity Holsinger. The Mustangs came away with a dominating victory, defeating Ridgevue 72-8.
“I am very excited for State. It is the highlight of the season. Doing so well in districts and in the season has put a sense of confidence in everyone. Being the number one seed has given us the drive to win the whole thing,” said senior Bella Thompson.
Districts and state are a time when athletes can truly set themselves apart from other teams. This is when it becomes clear who the state favorites are. The team walked away from districts with a 6A district championship after some commanding wins and a final win in the championship game against Boise. The Mustangs defeated Boise 65-41 behind another huge performance from star player junior Berkely Jones once again. Jones scored a game high 28 points.
This gives the team the momentum needed in order to go on and compete and hopefully win the Idaho 6A State Championship.
