This year, there is a lineup of new movies waiting to be released. The interesting similarity about most of these movies is that they are adaptations of popular books.
Books can create worlds, character development and emotional impact all with the imagination of an author and their use of written language. Movies can put these worlds into pictures and people can see the images created from their minds come to life.
Some movies that have just been released are “The Housemaid” and “People We Meet on Vacation”. “The Housemaid” is a film adaptation; the book was written by Freida McFadden and is a thriller novel filled with major plot twists throughout the story.
“The Housemaid” came out Dec. 19, 2025, starring Sydney Sweeney as Millie, an ex-convict hired as a housemaid to a wealthy family, Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester and Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, playing the rich family with an interesting family dynamic.
Another recent release on Netflix was “People We Meet on Vacation”. The original author of the book is Emily Henry. It is a cute, friends-to-lovers romance novel that follows two best friends, Poppy and Alex, through decades of summer vacations with each other.
According to usatoday.com, “Romance readers got the first of many upcoming Emily Henry adaptations early this year. Netflix’s ‘People We Meet on Vacation’ stars Emily Bader as Poppy and Tom Blyth as Alex, two estranged friends who reunite on one final, transformative trip. But Henry heads be warned – there are some pretty major changes from the book.”
It can be inferred that Henry will be creating many movie adaptations in the future with her admired romance books.
Moving onto unreleased books to movie adaptations, there are a few important ones to mention. “Wuthering Heights” a classic novel by Emily Brontë is being adapted by director Emerald Fennell and comes into theatres Feb. 13. It is a tragic story between Healthcliff and Cathrine Earnshaw; there is passion, revenge and love with all its destructive possibilities.
According to usatoday.com, “’Saltburn’ director Emerald Fennell will adapt Emily Brontë’s beloved Gothic novel ‘Wuthering Heights’ into a film starring Margot Robbie as Cathy and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff.”
A new movie to add to the dystopian series, “The Hunger Games”, is “Sunrise on the Reaping”, which will come to theatres later this year. The book came out March 18, 2025, fairly newer and was widely popular with the lovers of this series by Suzanne Collins. Everyone knows the classic character Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s mentor during their games, but his backstory was never explained. This most recent release shares Haymitch’s games during the second Quarter Quell, or 50th games, bringing a new twist to “The Hunger Games”.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” is set to be released Nov. 20, and the trailer has been released to get a sneak peek.
According to usatoday.com, “It was last year’s buzziest book release and this year’s buzziest movie. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their roles in ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ a new ‘Hunger Games’ prequel.”
Both of these movies, “Wuthering Heights” and “Sunrise on the Reaping”, will hopefully be great representations of the books they are based off and create the worlds and put it onto screen.
With all these new movies coming out, it can always be a great idea to read these exciting stories and then go watch to see the way characters are interpreted and shown visually.
