Many go to the theatre to see the ‘Mean Girls: The Musical.’ While it pays tribute to the original film, and the Broadway musical, it brings fans of both to the box office.

As many relive the past through movies, fashion and trends, one movie is making a comeback. “Mean Girls,” which was released in 2004, is one of the most universal chick flicks. The original “Mean Girls” is based on three girls, who are labeled as a clique of “Plastics” by their classmates.

Each person in the movie belongs to a particular group, but the Plastics were considered the pretty, popular girls who ran the school, led by Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams movie dives deeper to reveal a more complex theme of social hierarchy and the impact of gossip through high school.

This teen comedy explains the pressures of fitting into the high school standards and making sure everyone is approved. This movie exposes a theme of being authentic and true to yourself.

Twenty years later, the Plastics have returned to the big screen as a musical. This movie was announced through many social platforms. Many reviews have suggested that the musical was be a straight remake of the original “Mean Girls.” But the film promises a new twist on the story.

As this movie has had a huge impact on society, many had high expectations for the new movie. Students at Eagle High were asked if the musical was as good as the original.

“No, it was not as good as the original,” said sophomore Emma Hubinger.

In the musical, the same names are used from the 2004 film. It stars the original cast with Lindsay Lohan, who originally plays Cady Heron and Racheal McAdams, who originally plays, Regina George but now features a new star, Renee Rapp, as Regina George.

Students at Eagle High have expressed that they were unaware the new movie was a musical.

“It was awful, why were they always singing. Nobody told me it was a musical,” said senior Isabella Cameron

In 2019 and 2020, Renee Rapp played Regina George in the “Mean Girls” musical on Broadway. Many people had suggested she would be the perfect fit for the movie. Rapp gives a good amount of theatre and acting, making her the best fit for the lead role as Regina George, the lead Plastic.

It is expected that there will be a new generation of Plastics that will be running the show. Some fans are speculating that they will play the mothers of the new generation, while others think they will make small appearances.

The audience has shared they are excited for this new movie and the unique twist to the original movie. Others have voiced that they are worried it will be far off from the original, making it not enjoyable. The musical will be released on Jan. 12th on the big screen, so grab some popcorn and sing along with the Plastics.
