As the school year rolls on, students are already counting down the days to their next break. But they’re wondering whether winter or spring break is better. While both offer a much-needed break from classes, homework and early mornings, students have differing opinions about which break comes out on top.
For junior Alaina Hayhurst, spring break is the clear winner.
“Spring break is warmer, much more things are open and you’re able to do more,” she said. She enjoys being able to wear lighter clothes and spend time outside with friends. Compared to winter break, she feels there are more activities available.
“During winter break, you have to mainly do activities indoors, always have to cover up. The weather sucks,” Hayhurst said. While she appreciates the fresh start that comes with a new semester, along with the extra week off it gives her, she believes spring break offers more freedom and better weather.
Sophomore Winston Larsen sees it differently. For him, the extra time off during winter break makes all the difference.
“I like winter break more because it’s two weeks instead of one, like spring break is,” Larsen said. He takes advantage of the colder weather by heading to Brundage to snowboard.
“I can wake up early and go to Brundage,” Larsen said. Winter break gives him the perfect opportunity to spend his whole day on the mountain.

Larsen also pointed out that spring break can be disappointing if you don’t travel.
“Spring break is only fun if you go on trips. If you stay home, then the weather is too cold for outdoor activities like swimming, and it’s also rainy,” Larsen said. For him, winter offers more consistent activities close to home.
Senior Tayler Archer thinks that spring break has the advantage, especially during a demanding second semester.
“I like spring break more. It’s warmer and it’s a good break since the last semester is always the hardest and longest for me,” Archer said. With graduation approaching, Archer appreciates having time to recharge before the final stretch of the school year.
Ultimately, the debate between winter and spring break comes down to personal preference. Winter break offers a longer vacation and seasonal activities like snowboarding, while spring break brings warmer weather and pause during a busy semester. Whether students prefer snowy slopes or sunny afternoons, one thing is certain: any break from school is something to look forward to.
