Music is a big part of students’ lives, and everyone has their own taste. Some people love older music because of its history and the production, while others prefer more modern music for its relatability and style.
Junior Reese May prefers newer music because it feels more familiar and personal to her.
“I like newer music because it applies to me more. I like the beats, and the things they sing about are more relevant to me,” May said.
Her favorite songs are “A World Alone” by Lorde and “Cherry Waves” by Deftones, both of which are popular, newer songs. Additionally, her favorite artist is Drake, who is currently very popular amongst students. May says she discovered most of her music through TikTok and Spotify queues.
Junior Bobby Campbell shared that he enjoys both older and new music, but old music is his go-to choice.
“I like old music because it’s more passionate and I like the rhythm. Also, they more than often wrote their own songs,” Campbell said. Campbell’s favorite song is “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison.
“I first heard it from my dad; he played a lot of old albums when I was younger,” Campbell said.
Lastly, Junior Henry Bishop also prefers old music.
“Old music set the standard for all the music today, and it held more meaning than newer songs,” Bishop said. His favorite song is “Earth Angel” by Marvin and the Starlighters, and his favorite band is The Beach Boys, which he first listened to with his grandfather in Southern California.
Students have a special appreciation for music that is meaningful to them. New music is fun and easy to relate to, while old music has history and passion. Either way, music is still an important way for students to express themselves and connect with their friends and family.
