Thanksgiving is coming up soon, but it seems to be hidden by Christmas’s shadow. With these holidays arriving shortly, students question when the appropriate time to start celebrating Christmas is.
Thanksgiving is an important holiday to give thanks and share a delicious meal with family and friends. Most families sit at the dinner table with a spread of food and share the most important parts of their life. It is also an important holiday honoring a major event in the timeline of the U.S. This year, Thanksgiving is Nov. 27 and gives students a weeklong break from school.
Christmas comes around a month later, but the decorations are set up much sooner. And radio stations start blasting Christmas songs in early November. Eagle High students have varying opinions on when Christmas is supposed to start being celebrated.

“I think Christmas should start being celebrated right after Halloween,” said junior Mckenley Gupton.
Gupton believes Thanksgiving is important but shouldn’t get in the way of getting into the Christmas spirit a little early. She explained that her mom already has her house decorated with Christmas lights. She thinks Christmas music should be played a little later, after Thanksgiving, but Gupton definitely enjoys Christmas and the traditions it brings.
Christmas is a special time, similar to Thanksgiving, for family time and giving special gifts to make others smile. There are tons of different traditions families have during this wonderful time. Some will open one gift on Christmas Eve or have a special meal or maybe go through their stocking stuffers.
Junior Reese May shares opposing views from Gupton on when the Christmas spirit should come around.
“I think it can start being celebrated like the day after Thanksgiving,” May said. “I think Thanksgiving is important, it’s a day to be grateful and I respect the pilgrims.”
Although her Christmas lights are up year-round, she thinks Thanksgiving shouldn’t be skipped over. Christmas is an amazing holiday, but so is Thanksgiving, each deserves their own celebration.
Whether students at Eagle High start celebrating Christmas right after Halloween or after Thanksgiving is over, both holidays are important. They come with special traditions and bring people together to create new and lasting memories.
