On May 5, Eagle High is hosting Track and Field with Special Olympics Idaho. Eagle High has the important task of organizing it this year. The organization of this event is only possible due to the joint efforts and planning of many people at Eagle High and in the West Ada School District. Groups that are able to help plan Track and Field day are STUCO, Sources of Strength, teacher Scott Deck, teacher Nicole Hodgson, administration from Eagle High and representatives from Special Olympics Idaho.
“Overall, this event creates a culture at Eagle High of acceptance, belonging and of each student having a spot in this Mustang family,” said teacher Seth McMullen, “Events like these reaffirm why I got into this profession”
This day is also possible thanks to the commitment to volunteer work from students, Eagle High track athletes and members of the Just Serve Club. Volunteers will do things such as takes times, measure jumps and help out as much as possible. Eight schools are participating including several West Ada Schools, McCall High and the Young Athlete Program with Eagle Elementary Feeder Program for the Special Olympics. This helps build the program for younger generations. The Athlete Oath will be given by senior Nathan Alexander, and the announcer will be teacher Seth McMullen.
“Special Olympics is a truly special thing. The school comes together like no other time. Nothing but positive things come to those involved,” said teacher Seth McMullen.
The students participating will be able to compete in many different races, jumps, run-in relays and compete-in throws. Being able to compete with one another builds friendship and improves self-esteem among the athletes. Athletes will be given ribbons after competing and will hopefully leave with a smile and sense of accomplishment.
Athletes and students alike are very excited for the opportunity to compete, make friends and hopefully have a fun day in the sun. This is sure to be a day to remember.
