Valentine’s Day is a very popular holiday at Eagle High. It has great traditions, an interesting history and students had a great time this year.
The history of Valentine’s Day is intriguing. It is believed to have begun because of a Catholic Saint named Saint Valentine. This saint is known for performing secret marriages between couples after an emperor forbade marriage in an attempt to get men to join the army instead. There is a lot of uncertainty around the true beginning of Valentine’s Day, but that is one of the theories. Surprisingly, the holiday did not celebrate love until about the fourteenth century.
Even though the holiday was not initially as important, it has become quite an ordeal. Couples, friends and families celebrate love all over the world on Feb. 14. Some common traditions include going to dinner, getting flowers or gifts for one another or hanging out with friends.
One event that Eagle High students can’t wait for each year is the Sweetheart’s Dance. This annual Valentine’s Day dance is taking place on Saturday, Feb. 21 this year. Everyone is looking forward to a fun time.
Some students are making date plans for Sweethearts or Valentine’s. Junior Charlotte Viola plans to, “do something downtown, like go to The Warehouse or even the Record Exchange.” She is also excited to have Galentine’s with her friends.
“I prefer Galentine’s to Valentine’s,” Viola said about her fun plans for Sweetheart’s with her friends.
Many students are big fans of fun February events centered around Valentine’s Day.
