
Black History Month, every February, is a celebration. It is a symbol of the achievements and struggles of Black Americans throughout history. From Raven Wilkinson, the first African American dancer on stage in America, to Martin Luther King Jr.’s movement and milestones in civil rights, no contribution is too small.
Black History Month is a reflection on history. It is a moment to look back on dark times in America where slavery was prominent. The celebration is the progression of civil rights for equality in America. February reminds America of how much has been achieved.
“My African American hero is Lauryn Hill,” said senior Ray Gauthier. “She broke barriers in music by being a black female rapper.”
Other figures like Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. continue to shape society with their legacies.
According to Biography.com, Malcom X emerged as a leading voice of the Civil Rights Movement. He was known for his radicalism in violence, but he persisted through the movement.
Rosa Parks was also a Civil Right activist.
According to Biography.com, “Her bravery led to nationwide efforts to end racial segregation.” Joining the crew was MLK Jr. whose speeches and peaceful protests were a contribution to nationwide success in desegregation.
Beyond civil rights, African Americans have influenced the art, literature and science of America. Langston Hughes wrote poems on what his life was like for African Americans in the workforce and in everyday life. Raven Wilkinson had the courage to step on stage as the first African American ballet professional dancer.
According to Britannica.com, Katherine Johnson “calculated the path for Freedom 7, the spacecraft that put the first U.S. astronaut in space.”
This month reminds America of the richness and diversity of it’s heritage. Having a proper education of these events could help resolve the ongoing issues of social injustice and inequality. February is the platform for raising awareness.
Recognizing Black History helps America foster the characteristics of a powerful and kind nation. It fosters that of empathy, unity and progress toward a brighter future.
