With the focus of February being on all things love, now is the perfect time to watch romantic comedies, or rom-coms. Whether watching with a partner, friends or family, rom-coms are lighthearted and uplifting for everyone.
“I prefer the older rom-coms,” said sophomore Kaitlyn Allen. And many do, with some of the most popular being at least 20 years old, such as “When Harry Met Sally” from 1989, “10 Things I Hate About You” from 1999 and “50 First Dates” from 2004.
“I also think good music is a big part of how good a rom-com is,” Allen said. Music is a big part of all movies, with many having an instantly recognizable soundtrack. But it especially adds to the experience of a rom-com, creating the perfect emotional atmosphere. A few even have their “own” song, where it is impossible to not think of the movie whenever the song is played.
This includes “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” where the song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears is played multiple times, especially in vital, emotional scenes. Another is “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” where the two main characters sing their own rendition of “You’re so Vain” by Carly Simon in the touching, yet hilarious climax.
While the rom-com Allen recommends most is “27 Dresses” for its insight into the emotional world of being a woman and heartwarming storyline, her favorite quote comes from the movie “Pretty Woman”. Quotes like these make rom-coms all the more memorable, tugging at the heartstrings of watchers.
Vivian: “You’re late.”
Edward: ‘You’re stunning.”
Vivian: “You’re forgiven.”
Overall, rom-coms are a great way to bring people together and make anyone feel the spirit of love this February.
