Ugly Christmas sweaters have always been a fun, tacky tradition for families. Each December, people of all ages bring out their brightest, boldest and often questionable designs of sweaters.
Freshman Josh Clendenning said that his family has had a tradition of buying a new ugly sweater each year to wear on Christmas day. This year, he plans on buying a sweater that has a Grinch design on it.
“I plan on getting a Grinch ugly Christmas sweater,” Clendening said. “I found one that has Cindy Lou Who on the back.”
Clendenning said that his sister junior Maci Clendenning is also a part of the tradition. She explained that she likes to make her own ugly Christmas sweaters. She gets ideas from Pinterest and lets her creativity take over.
“I always make my own,” Clendenning said. “I’ve made my own since I was eight.”
Once she finishes her final touches, she plans on going ice skating with friends. She explained that she wants to bring her friends into the traditions of her ugly sweaters.
“Once I finish the final touches on this ugly Christmas sweater, my friends and I are going to wear ugly Christmas sweaters and ice skate in Caldwell,” Clendenning said. “I wanted to bring them into the tradition, so they can have a new tradition to start with their family.”
Freshman Tanner Priest also participates in wearing ugly sweaters during the Christmas season. Priest has a similar tradition of ugly sweaters like the Clendennings’. He and his family wear ugly Christmas sweaters on Christmas Eve while at his grandma’s house.
“We all wear sweaters and judge who has the best one,” Priest said. “The winner usually gets a prize after.”
As Christmas season comes quickly and the spirit fills the air, Eagle High students show their appreciation of ugly Christmas sweaters, family traditions and the love for the Christmas spirit. The students’ ugly Christmas sweater tradition continues to fill their house with the spirit, and they plan on keeping it up throughout the years.
