Every Veterans Day, communities across the United States come together to celebrate the men and women who have served our country. Whether or not it is considered a major holiday varies between communities, but Veterans Day holds an important place in American history and culture.
Veterans Day has a long history, going back to 1919 when, according to www. department.va.gov, President Woodrow Wilson declared Nov. 11th to be “Armistice Day.” It wasn’t until 1938, however, that Armistice Day became a legal holiday.
According to www. department.va.gov, “In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history… place the word ‘Veterans’”. Although, there have been many changes to Veterans Day throughout its history, these were some of the most significant.
There are many ways people across the U.S. celebrate Veterans Day, from official government ceremonies to small family gatherings.
Eagle specifically, has a few celebrations on Veterans Day. On Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m., Eagle High will host a free Veterans Day celebration in its auditorium, where drinks will be served, and will have an appearance from the Eagle Highschool band. There are events outside of schools as well.
“The City of Eagle honors veterans, active military and their families at our annual Veterans Day Breakfast,” said www.cityofeagle.org. This event will be taking place at the eagle senior center and will be taking place from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., on Saturday Nov. 13. This makes it a great Saturday morning activity.
On top of these two examples, there are other businesses throughout Eagle that proved discounts both for citizens and military personnel.
Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the courage, sacrifice and dedication of those who have defended the nation’s freedoms. Whether through large public events or quiet moments of reflection, honoring veterans connects communities and reinforces gratitude for this national day of remembrance.
