It seems that in the great white north, not everything is going as planned. With all the political and civil unrest coming back to bite everyone in 2025, the Canadian post is just starting to put itself back together after a month-long strike.
In November of last year, Canadian postal union workers went on a month-long strike following discrepancies over agreements made about expansion of the company, workplace security and higher wages. Canadian union workers across the country did not go to work and did not sort mail, leading to a big backlog and influx of mail that had been unsent.
Tentative agreements have started and have been ongoing since late December though on the Canadian post website, it says that they are in full operation and ready to move forward with clearing out the backlog. They have been working with the unions to hear out their demands and just as quickly get back to normal working operations.
On Jan. 7 of this year, they updated their customers by saying via their website canadapost-postescanada.ca, “Thank you to everyone for your patience these past few weeks as we’ve worked to safely restore normal operations while managing significant holiday volumes. Additional weekend hours have helped us process all accumulated parcels, and we are delivering them across the country.”
Those that have been sending mail to any possible family or friends in Canada obviously know that their package was delayed. But due to some members of the union being more radical in their demands, not all workers are back in service, leading to a lack of staff and a big backlog, so people can expect at least another few days of delays before packages get to them.
On their website, Canada Post says that “The existing collective agreements between Canada Post and CUPW have been extended until May 22. While the collective agreements are in effect, a labour disruption cannot occur.”
