One way to bring on the new year is setting goals for oneself to accomplish throughout the year

The start of a new year brings an opportunity to set goals that one wants to achieve throughout the year and it’s a good chance to reflect on what one really wants to become better at. Often when the new year is approaching, it is a time to look back at the previous year and decide what one wants to change. Eagle High students prepare for the new year by deciding what resolutions they want to achieve in 2023.

“I typically have a few New Year’s resolutions. This year it will be eating healthier, getting more sleep and going to the gym more often,” said senior Sierra Allen. Having different goals gives one many ideas to focus on for the year.

“I do New Year’s resolutions partly because my mom makes me, but I feel like I stick with that goal longer than the other I make,” Allen said.

Setting New Year’s goals is different then normal goals. It is a time to really reflect on what one wants to change. Often, the goal is written down or told to family and friends so that one is held more accountable.

“Every year, my whole family writes down our New Year’s resolutions. This year I wanted to land a “360” on skis and I accomplished that,” said senior Bryson Petzinger. “I haven’t fully decided what I want to accomplish this year, but it will be something to do with skiing.”

If one really puts effort into the goals, it can be accomplished. New Year’s resolutions can work if one makes it happen.

“I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions, but I think I’ll try to make some this year,” said senior Keaton Snyder.

“I want to be more consistent with going to the gym this upcoming year,” Snyder said. It is never too late to set goals for oneself. Even if one has never done it before, there is a chance to set New Year resolutions every year.

A common goal for New Year’s resolutions is working out. Often, people will set a goal of how many times they want to go to the gym and other things like what they eat.

“This year, I want to read more books and try different genres that I’m not familiar with. I like to read but I want to be more consistent with it,” said freshman Norah Bush. Resolutions don’t always have to be trying something brand new, they can just be progressing in a hobby and having a goal that goes with it.

“I think it’s important to set goals and resolutions for the upcoming year because it gives you long term vision and short-term motivation,” Bush said.

New Year’s resolutions are a chance for growth and trying new things. It’s an opportunity to try out something one has wanted to accomplish. Creating these goals brings excitement and anticipation for the new year and what will be accomplished in the upcoming year. Eagle High students are excited to see what the new year has in store them.
