Eagle High’s 2026 tennis season is beginning, so the Mustangs are working hard to practice the skills necessary for the challenging matches they’ll be facing during the season. From creating new goals to consistently practicing, athletes are excited and prepared for what this season has in store.

To kick off the season right, athletes set goals they’ll be working towards. This motivates them and sets them up for success. Sophomore tennis player Sarah Baird shared a couple of goals that she has for this season.

“My goals for this season are to have fun, learn, get better at tennis and hopefully be on varsity again… and get to state again,” Baird said.

Many tennis players love that the sport allows for time to socialize with others, be with friends and, most of all, have fun. Baird expressed her excitement to be able to play with her co-teammates.

“I am most excited for the people, because everyone on the team is so nice and makes practice a party every day… Tennis is already fun, but the people there make it even more fun,” Baird said.

Although tennis is exciting, it can be stressful for those who are planning on trying out or have high expectations for themselves in the upcoming season. Athletes must go through hours of training and self-improvement to prepare their physical capacities for the season. Sophomore Kaden Kuchynka is a great example of a player who constantly prepares for the trials.

“I have just been doing what I can, trying to find days where it’s warm to hit with my fellow teammates, and [I’ve] really [been] practicing my serves,” Kuchynka said. “I have also focused on my personal readiness by going to the gym five times a week to work my endurance to be able to last for 11.5 hours for districts.”

Similarly, Baird trains as often as she can to be ready for the season.

“I like going to the tennis court and playing with my younger brother and my older sister, just to have fun, but also [to] practice skills,” Baird said. “I’m taking tennis lessons from someone to… help me improve my technique. I also try to exercise even if I can’t go to the court to improve my endurance and speed,” Baird said.

The Eagle High Mustangs are prepared to fight, train and grow this 2026 tennis season. To learn more about match times and locations, contact head coach Percy Chan or see assistant coach Tammy Kern in S200. Matches officially start on Mar. 11, and additional information can also be found at https://www.westada.org/o/ehs/page/tennis.
