Eagle High offers a ski and snowboard program that provides students with opportunities to develop their skills on the mountain in a supportive and engaging environment. The name has transitioned from Ski Club to Snow Club. This program has been going on for 66 years and is expected to expand significantly over the years, with participation of over 32 schools across the Treasure Valley. This program consists mostly of high school students, but it is also open to middle school students.
The program welcomes individuals starting at a beginner level to advanced riders. The races take place at Bogus Basin Ski Resort. The Bogus Basin School Race Program (BBSRP) is the only one in the Northwest according to teacher Leslie Krause.
Krause and her husband have been volunteering in this program for over seven years. Teacher Layne Ward is also a part of this as is the advisor. Students can go to him if they want to sign up or have any questions.
“I am currently spearheading a recruitment committee is trying to bring potential schools on board and mentor new Snow Clubs,” Krause said. “Because of the interests in snowboarding and freestyle, as well as Nordic, we have changed the name from Ski Club to Snow Club.”
The race schedule for this season includes a total of five competitive events held on Saturdays, giving athletes plenty of opportunities to test their skills and track their improvement throughout the winter. The series begins with the first race on Jan. 10, followed by the second event on Jan. 17 and the third on Jan. 24.
The fourth race is scheduled for Jan. 31, and while there is an additional event on Feb. 7, there will be no Nordic race held on that date. The final race in the lineup is race number six and will take place on Feb. 14, marking the end of the season’s competitive schedule.
“I am a part of this program and it’s a really good way to get people up the mountain. I like it a lot,” said junior Taylor Cummings.
Students express how much they enjoy being a part of this program. They describe it as being one of the most memorable experiences of their school year. Beyond improving their skiing or snowboarding skills, it’s a chance to spend time on the mountain with friends and build stronger connections.
