The debate between whether the lake or ocean is more fun to spend a summer day at is a controversial topic. While both offer unique experiences, students tend to have a strong preference based on what they enjoy more on a hot day.
Sophomore Jake Ford has always preferred the lake over the beach because of the enjoyment boating and fishing brings him.
“I like to wake surf and go tubing on Lucky Peak. It’s one of my favorite things to do in the summer,” Ford said.
Ford has been spending countless summer days on the lake ever since he moved to Idaho. Ford’s love for the lake isn’t just from the activities it brings, however. It also comes with a traumatic memory that the ocean reminds him of.
“When I was around 10 years old, I got stung by a Sting Ray in the water,” he said, “Now every time I’m in the ocean, I still feel cautious about where I’m stepping.”
This experience helps explain why Ford prefers being on the lake, where the water is calm and there are no worries about stingrays or any other sea creatures.
While Ford’s cautions and interests in boating and fishing keep him on the lake, other students, like Junior Kamille Weiss, are more drawn to what the beach has to offer.
Weiss was born near Orange County, California and has been going to the ocean beaches since she was young. She recently moved to Idaho at the start of the first semester and is still reminiscing on the lively days she spent on the beach.
“One of my favorite things to do was watching the sunset at the beach,” Weiss said.
Weiss and her friends would ride their bikes down to the beach and watch the sunset while swimming in the waves on warm summer nights.
“I’ll always choose the beach over the lake; the beach never gets boring,” she said.
Weiss not only enjoys watching sunsets, but she also loves boogie boarding and playing volleyball and spike ball on the sand.
Ultimately, whether students choose to spend their day boating on clear waters or surfing through a big swell, both places offer a unique and fun experience.
