Bogus Basin Ski Resort finally opened

The day that many skiers look forward to every year has finally come. The opening of Bogus Basin Ski Resort is one of the most anticipated dates of the year as there are many students here at Eagle High that are passionate about snowboarding or skiing. This year, the official opening day was Nov. 29.

“I was so excited for the opening of Bogus because me and my family go up to go skiing almost every weekend during the winter season,” said junior Nicola Forbess.

Forbess also expressed how excited she was for the resort to open, but also, how busy it was on opening day due to hundreds of other excited skiers and snowboarders. She woke up extra early to make it up before the crowd, but everyone else seemed to have had the same idea.

The only downside of this season is that there is not as much snow as previous years, causing them to have to create more man-made snow.  According to Snoflo.org as of Jan. 21, Bogus has only a snowpack depth of 11 inches, which is about 75 percent below the seasonal average.

“I work at Bogus, and since there is barely any snowfall up there, they don’t really need any help, so I haven’t been scheduled to work in weeks, which is really annoying actually,” said senior Jackson Giorgetti.

The lack of snow is not only unfortunate for fellow skiers and snowboarders, but also the students who are relying on the snow to get work and money. Giorgetti said how excited he was to start working at Bogus and even quit his old job in order to start, just to never get any hours due to the situation.

There are several new features and advancements at the resort this year. Some of those features include more beginner friendly chairlifts and programs for those who are still learning their way around the mountain. There have also been new access trails and points to help skiers get around more efficiently.

Despite the little snow, people are not letting it affect their fun and excitement towards the season. People work endlessly every year to make visitors have the best experience possible and Bogus remains one of the most visited ski areas for locals.
