For many people, Christmas is the most anticipated holiday of the year. However, others may disagree and even think that Christmas gets a little more hype than it deserves. With all the joy that comes with the season of Christmas, it is hard to understand why anyone would think it is overrated.
“Christmas is not overrated; it is an awesome holiday,” said junior Emily McAllister. Christmas truly is a great holiday for many. With the festive decorations, cheerful music and delicious peppermint treats, there’s so many things to love about this magical time of year.
“Christmas is the best holiday, and Christmas break is definitely not overrated,” said junior McKinley Boehler. Christmas break is one of the best parts of this time of year because what other holiday gives students two weeks off school? The break is the perfect opportunity for students to spend time with their loved ones and rest after the stress of the first semester. There’s nothing more relaxing than cozying up to watch a movie on the couch with the fireplace burning and the Christmas lights twinkling brightly. However, some people do not think that Christmas is all it is chalked up to be.
“Christmas is blown too far out of proportion and people focus too much on materialism rather than appreciating family and being together with loved ones,” said junior Lily Towne. Christmas is one of the few times during the year where people naturally come together to celebrate with the people they are close to. Materialism is not a problem that stems from Christmas itself, but from people’s attitudes towards the holiday. Instead of criticizing Christmas for being a materialistic holiday, people should change their view of the season and make sure they are keeping the values of family, connection and generosity at the center of their celebrations.

Christmas may even be underrated when it comes to the benefits of the holiday for one’s mental health. When people are given time off work and school, it provides a great way to recover from the stresses of life. Another aspect of Christmas is all the traditions that are unique to each family. These traditions provide a sense of comfort because they bring families together in the familiarity of the Christmas season.
Lastly, gift-giving is a great way to show generosity and affection to loved ones. Giving or receiving gifts is not materialistic if done with the correct intentions. Giving gifts to others helps strengthen relationships and show people that they matter. Receiving gifts makes one feel loved and seen, especially if the gift is meaningful or personal.
Christmas is not overrated. At its core, Christmas is a great time to bond with family over shared traditions and the joy of giving. As long as the meaning of the holiday is not lost, the season of Christmas reminds people to slow down and appreciate the things that truly matter in life while surrounded by family and friends.
