Eagle High’s spring sports are up and running, including a new season for girls’ lacrosse. The girls are excited to get on the field and start playing games. New players and returning players combine together to create an impressive team this season.
Lacrosse is a tough sport that relies on teamwork and technique. There are four main positions on the field: defense, midfield, attacker and goalie. With 22 girls on the field at a time, 11 from each team, the main objective of the game is to get the ball into the back of the net.
Eagle High has one girls’ team this year, and have nine new players joining the team. Even though they lost some seniors from last season, the team is gaining four new sophomores and five new freshmen.
“I’m excited to play. Everyone is so friendly, and I’ve already learned so much,” said sophomore Maddie Giorgetti. Giorgetti is a first-time player, and before this season, has never picked up a lacrosse stick before. Jumping into a new sport can be scary but she said the team has made her feel very welcome.
The team’s first game is March 4, and the girls have been practicing every day after school to prepare.
“We do drills like passing and ground balls, and we play sevens,” said sophomore Reese Northcut. “We also do workouts twice a week after practice.”
Lacrosse involves a large amount of running back and forth, so conditioning is also a must in the team’s practice schedule. Ball control is another important aspect of lacrosse, which is why the team does these specific drills to improve their skills.
Towards the end of their season, the girls have a chance to go to state. Last year, the team got second place. For this upcoming season, they express hope and confidence for this year’s state competition.
“I think we have a really good chance at winning state. We lost good seniors, but so did everyone else, and we all have a strong bond,” said junior Tayler Archer.
With positive energy and a strong team relationship, the team has a bright future for a great season. The newer players and the experienced players work together on the field to score points and win their games.
