As mats roll out, Eagle High’s wrestling team is ready to make a statement this season. After a solid showing last year, the Mustangs are ready to take winning to new heights this season. Coach Michael Stone is head wrestling coach this year for the Mustangs. The team is led by these captains: senior Anthony Toomey, sophomore Ivan Ivanov and junior Tommy Stone.
Wrestling is a sport of mental and physical fortitude and is not for the weak. The boys and girls wrestling team are constantly hard at work. They practice daily after school in the wrestling room for about two hours, starting with a thorough warmup before drills and ending with conditioning.
“Wrestling is a serious competition not just with your opponent but your own mind,” said freshman Ian Zawadzki. “Fighting through mental blocks when you are tired or in pain in most of the battle.”
Both boys and girls have been very successful in the past with the girls achieving four state championship rings in recent years.
“We haven’t won State in a few years but that will change soon, we are as motivated as ever,” said senior Anthony Toomey.
Even though wrestling is considered an individual sport, every match counts towards the team’s overall score. Every win is crucial for a team’s collective success. With a driven and talented group, the Mustangs are looking to make a mark this season.
As the season begins, it seems clear that the Eagle High wrestling team is motivated and united to take their team to new heights this season and bring home a state championship.
