This year, horror movies have been all the rage. With the spooky season approaching soon, students have plenty of new scary thrillers to binge watch with their friends. There are old classics like “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th”, and new films like “Weapons”, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer”.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” came out Sept. 5, 2025, and brings back the classic characters from earlier in the franchise, including Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, they conquer the evil spirit that has taken over the Smurl family.
According to www.CBR.com, “The ghosts terrorizing the Smurl family are extremely spooky and memorable, and some of the early jump scares are solid — there’s a good blend of in-your-face frights and more subtle ‘Am I seeing something in the dark background?’ moments.”
This movie creates a tense atmosphere, just what horror fanatics are hoping to see when a new scary movie shows up in theatres. To accomplish this impressive blend of jump scares and psychological horror is what makes “The Conjuring: Last Rites” truly scary. This movie made a great ending to the Warrens’ story and gave Eagle High students a grand scare.
“My favorite scary movie is the new ‘Conjuring’ because I’ve seen all the others and it gives me a little electric feeling in my bones,” said junior Joey Kelley.
Kelley explained he loves watching horror movies because they give him an anxious feeling that no other genre of movies creates. They’re always fun to watch with others who also enjoy these movies, like his girlfriend, senior Tayler Archer.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” is a terrifying spiritual horror movie filled with suspense and jump scares to get someone’s heart pounding.
Another thriller movie that has recently come out that students loved is “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Its plot follows a group of teenagers who accidentally killed a man in the past, and someone finds out what they did and sends each of them a note that says, “I know what you did last summer.” The group reunites to find out who is blackmailing them.
The movie came out July 18, 2025, and is a remake of the classic 1997 slasher film. Its main actors are Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King and Tyriq Withers.
As this horror movie came out in the summer, it allowed Eagle High students to see a preview for the upcoming fall months.
“I liked the suspenseful feel the movie gave me,” said junior Kyliegh Plaisted. “It has some funny parts, but I was tensed up most of the time.”
Plaisted watches a lot of horror movies with her friends and her favorite part of watching scary movies is never knowing what will happen next.
This October, the time of tricks and treats, is a perfect time to snuggle up with some popcorn and put on one of these highly recommended horror movies. And as of now, there are already trailers coming out with more frightening films to watch.
