Over spring break, Eagle High, Meridian High, a high school from Iowa and a high school from New Mexico traveled to Peru for a school trip. With a big group of 40 people, they traveled to many different places in Peru. The students and teachers tried a lot of new things and experienced different and unique cultures.
The eight-day trip began on March 3 and the group started in Lima, the capital of Peru. Throughout the rest of the trip, they visited Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. Spanish teacher Heather Pinder, who went on the trip with the students, shared some fascinating things that the group saw while visiting all these places.

“One of the coolest places we went were the Uros Floating Islands near Puno,” Pinder said. “Everything was made from reeds and manmade. The ground and the roofs of the huts were all made of reeds. It was so unique,”
Other exciting places they went to include the Incan ruins, different cathedrals and Ollantaytambo, a continuously lived in Incan town.
Peru’s culture is very unique, and Pinder explained how their style and clothing is interesting and different from culture in the United States.
“The people in Peru were all very humble and more quiet people. But it was amazing. You would see all these women in their native costume, wearing very colorful, beautiful clothing with crazy hats and pom poms in ends of their braids,” Pinder said.
Pinder explained how there was a lot of music and dancing where Peruvians would play music and dance in their colorful, native outfits.
The trip permitted the students to learn a lot about the Incan culture and about the pre-Incan cultures of the Quechua and Amara. The group enjoyed the trip and were glad to experience different cultures and try new things.
