It seems that every year, Disney is digging their hole deeper and deeper. The live action remakes of their fan-favorite movies show that acting can’t capture the magic of animation.
Ever since 2017, Disney has taken a harsh left turn from the original stories and animation that captures hearts and minds, to soulless live action and computer-generated remakes of their most popular franchises and characters. According to www.imdb.com, “Snow White” is only a 1.6 out of ten on their rating scale. Another movie that was poorly anticipated, “Whinnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” did better, gaining a 2.9 out of ten. There are many Disney live action remakes, but none can truly compare to the original in terms of storytelling and characterization.
Disney’s recent big flops, includes “Snow White” and a prequel to the “Lion King” series of movies, only making a combined 331 million dollars in the domestic box office. The Marvel film “Avengers: Endgame” made more than these two movies. Snow White specifically took a torch to the internet, having plenty of memes and videos surrounding how bad fans all thought the movie was going to be, since all the dwarves were not played by actors, but instead were entirely CGI.
Speaking of actors, the internet was lambasting actress Rachel Zegler, the girl portraying Snow White. Since she is not entirely pale skinned, like the original was, and while she doesn’t look anything like the original, she did try her best and has been moving forward despite the harsh words about her. While people understand that nothing can truly be one to one when creating a live action, Disney’s idea to try and be more ‘inclusive’ in their movies by casting a tanned woman to play a pale character is just unfair to the original story and their own history as a company. The first ever animated Disney movie was Snow White. Divesting from that in an attempt to be more inclusive ruins a film before it even starts filming.
Disney has also made false claims about their live action movies in the past. Last year, “Simba: The Lion King” a prequel story to the “Lion King” franchise and a Disney Live action movie, was being falsely claimed by Disney as ‘The Number One Movie in the world’ when it was actually ‘Sonic 3’, who made 236 million dollars domestically, an additional 370% over what “Mufasa” made at just 63.8 million dollars domestically.
