In an historic moment the Gulf of Mexico has officially been renamed the “Gulf of America.” This decision was made by President Donald Trump in January of 2025 through executive order 14172. This decision aims to reflect the Gulf’s importance to not just one country but the whole region of North America, according to Trump. The new name highlights the connection of the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean nations that rely on the Gulf for trade, industry and resources.
Secretary’s order 3423 directed the Board of geographic Names to immediately rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This followed Donald Trump’s Executive order, “Restoring Names that honor American greatness.”
“We have always known about the importance of the Gulf, and I think the name change is interesting and pretty cool,” said junior Grayson Bruch.
The Gulf of has an average depth of 5300 feet and is a major body of water bordered and nearly landlocked by North America. The Gulf of America spans over 1,700 miles of U.S. coastline.
According to wisc.edu, “From its rich fisheries, which drive local economies, to its vast reserves of oil and natural gas that have fueled innovation and prosperity, the Gulf of America has consistently been a cornerstone of the nation’s growth. Its ports rank among the largest and most impressive in the world.”
The ports bring American goods to the global markets as well as importing goods into the United States. Many recognize the Gulf’s enduring contributions to the economic growth and vitality of the United States; President Trump’s directive action affirms its central importance to the nation by officially renaming it the Gulf of America.
