This year, according to 2025 www.wickedlocal.com, around 260 planes will crash and be fatal. Just this year there have been more than 80 fatal aviation accidents, with roughly 85 people passing from these crashes. Many of the crashes that have occurred have become increasingly well known, including the American Airlines regional jet and Army helicopter collision in Washington D.C. While the probability of getting into a plane crash is still significantly low, they can be devastating. Not all 87 aviation accidents will be named, but here’s a look at the most widespread tragedies.
On Jan. 29, an American Airlines regional jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. Unfortunately, out of the 64 plane passengers and three in the helicopter, nobody survived.
Currently, there are multiple reasons for the crash.
According to www.nbcchicago.com reporting’s from investigators say that “D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport may have had inaccurate altitude readings in the moments before the crash and also may not have heard key instructions from air traffic controllers to move behind the plane”. Jennifer Homendy, the National Transportation Safety Board Chairwomen, stated that the transmission in the helicopter cockpit was incomplete and made it difficult to follow shift position details. It will take almost a year to get a final NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) report.
Later that month, according to The Associated Press, carrying six people, including a child who had spent months at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia hospital heading back to Mexico, the Learjet 55 fell into a steep descent and crashed into a street on Friday, Jan 31
According to www.usnews.com, only a minute after takeoff the air ambulance crashed, and the impact onto the busy street engulfed the plane in flames along with the nearby homes, leaving a “crash scene of at least four blocks”. Seven people, including the mother of the child heading to Shriners Children’s Philadelphia hospital, on the plane and the child’s father in a car below were killed, along with 19 others injured. Currently, the investigation into the incident has Jet Rescue operations in both Mexico and the U.S.
In Alaska on Feb. 6, a small commuter plane spiraled to the ground after going missing off the radar for thirty miles. After a wide search, its remains were found along with the nine passengers and pilot who, unfortunately, didn’t survive the crash.
Anthony Robledo author from USA Today article www.usatoday.com reported that, “The victims included two men who were on a work trip to service a heat recovery system vital to a community’s water treatment plant, a retired teacher who was on a trip mentoring other teachers, and another person who was flying for a doctor’s appointment”.
At Marana Regional Airport two small planes collided, resulting in the deaths of two.
The Associated Press article “A look at recent aviation disaster in North America” says, “Investigators say each plane had two people aboard when they collided. One plane landed uneventfully and the Lancair with Reinath [70-year-old victim] and Gifford [76-year-old victim] hit the ground near a runway and caught fire”. This collision occurred only a little over a week after two private planes crashed at Scottsdale Airport on Feb. 10.
On Monday, Feb. 17, a Delta Plane flipped onto its roof in Toronto. Fortunately, all 80 passengers and pilots made it out and were accounted for, although reportedly 18 were injured. This plane was carrying two adults and one child to hospitals in the city. Currently, there is no explanation for the cause of the crash.
According to NBC Chicago article www.nbcchicago.com, “Cox, who flew for U.S. Air for 25 years and has worked on NTSB investigations, said the CRJ900 aircraft is a proven aircraft that’s been in service for decades and does a good job of handling inclement weather”.
These crashes have been overwhelming to the families whose loved ones passed away. However, even with all these crashes, the chances of getting into one is still extremely low, according to “Are plane crashes on the rise? What to know about recent incidents” reports, Americans have a 1-in-93 chance of dying in a motor vehicle crash, while deaths on airplanes are too rare to calculate the odds”. Don’t let these accidents deter traveling with these safe and trusted airlines, they have all been tested and proved secure.
