Disney has been making a lot of remakes of their cartoons into live-action films, like “The Jungle Book,” “Maleficent,” “Cinderella,” “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and many more. While some of these live-action remakes were very liked, others faced significant backlash and dislike.
The new “Snow White” live action is directed by Marc Webb and stars Rachel Zegler as the main role. Zegler is known for her breakout performance in “West Side Story” and will hopefully bring new energy to the iconic princess. Beside her, Gal Gadot will be the Evil Queen.
This live action remake is not only a remake of “Snow White” but is also supposed to expand on Snow White’s journey, giving her more depth and agency as a character. Instead of being a damsel in distress, Snow White will reportedly be portrayed as a leader who takes charge of her own destiny. This shift aligns with Disney’s recent trend of modernizing its princess characters to be more independent and have empowering roles. However, the new “Snow White” remake seems to not be a fan favorite.
According to The Direct, “Most recently, the Snow White trailer was dislike-bombed upon its release on YouTube.” However, only time will tell how the film performs. “Snow White” was officially released in theaters on March 21, and audiences will ultimately decide its fate, although some students are already disappointed with what they know about the movie.
“I think that it isn’t portrayed as well as it could’ve been. I had higher expectations for the characters, such as making the dwarfs less animated and to have an original depiction of Snow White,” said sophomore Savannah Avila.
While Disney’s new live-action “Snow White” offers a new perspective on the classic tale with a more empowered version of the main character, it’s still too early to tell if the film will win over audiences, especially with the backlash surrounding the trailer. As with many remakes, the real test will come when the film is released, and only time will tell whether it will be loved or hated.
