Through the winter months, student athletes have a great opportunity provided by Eagle High to join the ski and snowboard club. In the club, students attend meetings and compete in races.
“This is my first year in the club and I have met some pretty cool people,” said sophomore Cole Fallow. “We go up to Bogus Basin and compete in timed races against other schools.”
This club is somewhat unique because students with more experience in winter sports can make connections with others through their related interests.
“Racing on a team with the same people you go to school with is a huge plus,” Fallow said. Another plus is that this program benefits the West Ada district as a whole. Eagle High has a large and still growing student body, and it can be hard for students to meet people they can genuinely connect with. Student participation in similar clubs provided district-wide is a great way to expand a student’s horizon and open them up to new friends and opportunities outside the walls of their school.
“One of my favorite things about the club is getting to see friends from other schools,” said sophomore Sofia Erickson. Erickson has been skiing for many years and is a second-year member of the club.
“I started it in middle school because some of my friends were, and I just kept signing up,” said Erickson “it’s a great way to improve.”
The club participates in district wide races at bogus basin. These competitions are based on skill and speed. Races are individually scheduled on Saturday afternoons. Signups are available to any student attending Eagle High and the clubs and meetings are advised by teacher Layne Ward in the east hall.
Students participating in ski and snowboard clubs create lasting memories, harness their skills by encouragement of other students and hard work. Additionally, they get to meet students with similar interests to them and have a great reason to go up to the snowy mountains surrounding us.
