The winter season is starting to settle into the Treasure Valley, bringing with it some fun activities that students look forward to all year long. Whether they are looking to embrace the snow, enjoy festive lights or cozy up indoors, there is no shortage of activities to make winter break unforgettable. The electric spirit of the holidays is only around for a short time, so it is important to make the most of that time by making fun memories that will last a lifetime.
One activity that students enjoy is going ice skating, usually at the rink in The Village in Meridian. After bundling up and renting skates for seven dollars, it can be fun to get the hang of trying to skate on a new and slippery surface. After a while, it gets easier not to fall and true talents emerge. After spending time outside in the cold, it can be fun to shop at nearby stores or grab a hot chocolate for 3 dollars from La Crème Frozen Yogurt.
Students also may enjoy spending time in the snow. Building a snowman, having a snowball fight, going sledding and going skiing are all perfect activities for taking advantage of snow while it lasts. Many students love to ski at nearby resorts such as Bogus Basin, Brundage Mountain and Tamarack Resort. They can also enjoy a fun tubing hill at Gateway Parks in Eagle Island State Park.
Another fun activity many enjoy is hosting a Christmas movie marathon. When it is cold outside, nothing beats staying in and cozying up with a warm blanket. Classics like “Elf,” “Home Alone” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” are perfect to set the mood for a night in with friends or family. Loading up with popcorn, candy canes and fuzzy blankets also enhance the holiday spirit and make the night even better.
“When it is cold outside, I love to watch movies,” said senior Gavin Crawford. “My favorite one is ‘A Christmas Story’ because it is funny, and it always makes me laugh.”
Students can also get matching pajamas and bake treats or decorate gingerbread houses. One of the best ways to spend the holidays is in festive Christmas pajamas. Whether matching with siblings, friends or a pet, it is an easy way to get into the spirit of the season. Pair it with a night spent baking, and it is the recipe for a great time. Having a gingerbread house decorating competition can satisfy those who enjoy tackling a challenge and showing off their artistic skills.
Another fun activity is taking time to view the Christmas lights that brighten up the city during cold and dark winter nights. Some choose to drive around in their warm cars around neighborhoods, while others can get out and walk around to view them. Some popular places to view lights outside are at Scentsy Commons and at the Idaho Botanical Garden. At Expo Idaho, students can stay in their cars and drive through millions of lights and decorations, all while listening to holiday music from the warm comfort of their vehicles.
“Every year during Christmas break, I get warm drinks and go see Christmas lights with my family,” said freshman Brielle Jones. “I really love it and the time we get to spend together.”
Whether it’s hitting the slopes, sipping a warm drink or cozying up in pajamas, there are activities out there for everyone. It is important to take advantage of the magical spirit that comes with this time of year and get the most out of it by spending time making memories with loved ones.
