Being a musician requires an incredible amount of dedication, especially in high school. Student musicians must put in significant practice time outside of school in addition to the intense focus required during rehearsals. One student, however, has shown his ability to thrive in this environment in not just one class, but in several.
Senior Paul Fillmore has had a passion for music for over twelve years, the genesis of his interest starting with the piano.
“My family got a piano when I was around six years old. I would practice some simple exercises on the piano and that’s what really got me interested in music,” Fillmore said.
Fillmore is a member of the Eagle High percussion ensemble, Sonous choir, Premium Blend, Varsity Quartet and the choir’s executive council.
“I love choir. There’s a sense of connection there from singing with other people that you enjoy being around that you can’t find elsewhere,” Fillmore said. This is Fillmore’s second year in both the elite chamber choir Sonous, as well as the Premium Blend jazz choir at Eagle High.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be in varsity Quartet this year. I’m excited to see what we’re able to accomplish,” Fillmore said. This is Fillmore’s first year in Varsity Quartet, Eagle High’s elite men’s quartet.
Fillmore is also a student conductor for the auditioned women’s choir Bel Canto. Fillmore enjoys learning and figuring out the best ways to fulfill this leadership role.
In addition to his choir responsibilities, Fillmore has also participated in the Eagle High percussion ensemble since his freshman year.
In his time as a member of the ensemble, the group has won first place at the DIII marching band competition twice, as well as winning first place at the Winter Guard International Indoor Percussion World Championships last year.
“My greatest achievement in music so far is winning first place at WGI World Percussion Championships last year. It was an unexpected victory and certainly a very memorable one,” he said.
Fillmore is incredibly grateful for his time participating in multiple music groups at Eagle High and encourages all students to participate in music classes.
