Some students might wonder who it is that plans all of the fun events, sets up school fundraisers and designs positive posters at Eagle High, and the answer is often STUCO, or Student Council. This group of students are the masterminds behind prom, trunk-or-treats, blood drives and sporting games, which is where their main focus lies. This school year and the next few months will be filled with exciting and creative events that STUCO has planned.
Most events that STUCO plans and directs include fundraising. These fundraising events go to Make a Wish, which Eagle High sponsors. One child from the Make a Wish foundation will have the school’s help to grant their wish. These several events will be able to raise funds for the Make-a-Wish foundation.
“Mustang Swag Raffle, the donations from Pie-A-Teacher, and the miracle minutes during the Battle of the Bolt basketball game” said teacher Brittany Dutton. Donations from these events, towards the Make-a-Wish foundation, will be an important goal to reach by the time it comes to an end.
“All of the money we will raise will go to our Make a Wish foundation that we’re working on, same thing with why we’re doing a lot of other activities right now to raise money for Make a Wish,” said junior Chloe Janson.
The last event that STUCO planned was the trunk-or-treat for Halloween, which was directed by Janson. This year’s trunk-or-treat was her favorite event they have planned so far.
“Trunk or treat was my favorite. Basically, for trunk or treat, it was two dollars for a kid and three dollars for an adult,” Janson said. “We had a lot of clubs bring cars and then they give out candy, and they talked a little bit about their club or sporting event.”
Their most recent event, a blood drive, took place on Dec. 3. The blood donations will go towards the American Red Cross.
STUCO’s next event is Battle of the Bolts, which is when Eagle High’s basketball team goes up against the rival school Owyhee High. This is where students can go to cheer on and support Eagle’s basketball team as well as try to out-cheer Owyhee’s students. Junior Madison Jones will be directing this event.
Something to not forget is how this whole organization stays organized. The teacher that helps direct and run this STUCO, which is also a class, is Brittany Dutton. She keeps everyone on track when they have strict deadlines for their projects and event planning.
“In order to stay on track, we try to backwards plan—so big items, then we back fill the planning to include ordering supplies, leaving enough time to plan and prepare,” Janson said. “Having sign ups with enough time to prepare, communicating details to parties involved, and then we have documents for each class period to make sure items are addressed in a timely fashion.” These are all important characteristics a successful organization must have to keep everything orderly and on time.
While only a few members of STUCO were highlighted, credit is due to the whole group. These students work hard and put their leadership skills to the test while they organize these events. Students only see the output of their achievement, so their services are highly appreciated.
