Many Eagle High Mustangs proudly cheered on the girl’s rugby “Sevens” season, who showed off their fast-paced games full of teamwork and quick moves. In rugby Sevens, each team has seven players on the field and two short halves of only seven minutes each, so players must stay focused and give it their all every second of the game. The Lady Mustangs play Sevens in the fall and Fifteens in the spring.
“The season lasts from summer to fall, and the season just ended with varsity at state this year,” said sophomore Vienna Perry.
This season, players for Eagle High worked hard to secure 2nd place overall in state for the varsity Sevens team against Rocky Mountain High. In addition, the junior varsity team won districts.
Games are packed with quick passes, strong tackles and fast sprints as teams work together to score points. With limited time, every play counts, and teammates must trust each other to make the right moves. Team cooperation is an integral part of playing well on the field.
Off the field, the team spirit grew strong this year, with players forming close friendships that helped them work together better during games. Rugby Sevens is gaining popularity for its exciting, high-speed style, and this season’s team put on an impressive show. This is due to the contributions of every member of the team, not just the key varsity players, although juniors Madison Cerda and Ella Elordi played key roles this year.
“I didn’t play Sevens, but I love our team so much! I enjoy seeing them play and supporting them.” said junior Chloe Franks.
“My favorite part of rugby this year was the team dinners! They were a great chance to have fun with each other.” said senior Abby Fuhriman.
After this fall, the hard work and dedication of the players are clear to see, making this an exciting time for the girls’ rugby Sevens. With the Seven’s rugby over, Eagle High anticipates an amazing spring season.
