As Thanksgiving approaches, there is one question that divides families and friends around the country: what is the best pie flavor? From pumpkin to pecan to the classic apple, each flavor has its dedicated fans, and the battle of best flavor ultimately can be left only to opinion.
For many, Thanksgiving is not complete without a slice of pumpkin pie. It is a staple for the dinner, especially due to its inclusion of many seasonal spices.
“Pumpkin is definitely the best,” said senior Kylie Loucks. “I really like the pumpkin flavor that is so festive for the fall season, and the texture of it is perfect.”
There is definitely something about a good pumpkin spice flavor that feels cozy and matches the season well, which makes pumpkin pie a top runner in the debate.
Pecan pie also is a top choice for many people during the holiday season. The southern favorite features a sweet filling with crunchy pecans on top. It is very rich and perfect for those with a sweet tooth. It has a unique flavor that is intensely sweet, nutty and has a crunch that makes it a very tempting choice on the dessert table.
There are, however, many people who prefer less traditional flavors, such as chocolate, coconut cream and key lime pie. It can be fun to venture out of the more common seasonal flavors and try something that is outside the box. Non-traditional pies add an extra layer of excitement to the table and cannot be forgotten in the lineup.
Apple pie will surely forever remain a crowd-pleaser with its status as a classic American dessert. It is often a top pick for the holidays as apple picking season begins to come to a close.
“Nothing is better than a warm apple pie with some vanilla ice cream,” said sophomore Presley Deck.
The texture is very well crafted, with a delicious apple filling that contrasts against the flaky crust that offers the ultimate balance of soft and crispy. The spices present in the pie are noticeable without being overbearing which creates a taste that everyone can enjoy.
The best-pie crown surely must go to the tried and true classic apple pie, although the runners up follow closely behind. Each pie truly brings something different to the table, and no matter the flavor, pie is definitely the dessert of the season.
