This year, Eagle High athletes attempt to redeem themselves from a difficult season last year showing they are a high-ranking swim team. With the new addition of 12 freshmen and new team captains, this year’s team is fighting its way to the top of the leaderboards.
The varsity boys and girls competing in their relay teams are on a winning streak. The 200-meter freestyle relay, as well as the 400-meter freestyle relays in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, have been taking first place. So far, Eagle High has faced Meridian High, Capital High, Rocky Mountain High and Boise High. At the Idaho Central Aquatic Center meet, Eagle High pulled through to second place against Boise High and Meridian High.
The varsity girls are gaining a great reputation at meets for placing first in relay events. In every meet, they have pushed ahead of the competition and achieved personal bests in most events.
One of the leading causes of the overall boost in team spirit and improvement can be attributed to the new captains. Senior Ryan Colvin and Senior Macie Baisch lead this year’s team members as the 2024 captains. Senior Henry Bokma is also doing an excellent job of inspiring Eagle Swim.
“We all know Henry is swimming for D2 in college. It’s pretty amazing and he inspires all of us to do a little bit better,” said junior Soleil Tapia.
Team spirit could be a major contributor to the success of the swim season so far.
“I’d say that when people are excited to hang out together, more of us actually show up to practice and put in the effort,” said freshman Lydia Bodily.
Practicing intensely and finishing difficult practices takes hard work. These efforts are reflected at meets as swimmers achieve faster times at each competition.
“We might have a chance to place at districts this year,” Tapia said.
Due to the hard work of these athletes and renewed team spirit, Eagle Swim intends to finish the season on a high note.
