Over the first four weeks of the NFL season, there has been some clear Super bowl caliber teams and there have been some teams that have been so terrible that they are the joke of the league. The NFL is a complicated league and if one doesn’t understand how to adapt to the flow of the game every year, they will be left in the dust. Some have adjusted to become top dogs, while others have fallen from grace. So, who is statistically the best team?
One of the teams that has come out of nowhere this season is the Miami Dolphins. Under head coach Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins have a unique way of playing football. Most of the skill players are under the height of six feet and possess lightning speed to run past defenders. McDaniel’s offense is led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa is leading the league in passing yards with 1,306, which is a huge factor in the Dolphins 2,044 total yards on offense this season. They also have a running game that is backed by running back Raheem Mostert, which is helping the Dolphins by getting 176 rushing yards each game.
The Cleveland Browns also are up there with the best teams this season. Although, they don’t have the best offense, the Browns’ defense has been spot on. The Browns have only given up 60 total points to their opponents and have only given up 767 total yards. The new Browns’ defense is anchored by defensive ends Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith, two elite edge rushers in the NFL with a combined sack total of five.
According to clevelandbrowns.com, “They currently lead the league in efficiency; the secondary has allowed 136 yards per game and the run defense allowed 156 rushing yards – 52 rush yards per game. They have the best third-down defense in the league, allowing a conversion only 36 percent of the time. The Browns defense has also only given up one touchdown through three games.”
“This has been such a good start to the season, I have loved watching the bad teams do good and the good teams do trash,” said junior Danny Lemming.
Although these teams have been dominant on offense and defense respectfully, the most well-rounded team in the league would be the San Fransisco 49ers. The Niners have the number two offense in the league with 1,592 total yards thanks to quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffery, while also having the number five defense with star players like defensive end Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner leading the Niners to only giving up 1,137 yards.
The San Fransisco 49ers are the best team in the league based solely on statistics. They might not be the team NFL fans wanted to hear to be on top, but they are statistically the best team in the league right now.
