As the college football season comes to an end, many events have taken place that many argue have either jeopardized or helped the Boise State University (BSU) Football team. One event that has had a particular effect was the termination of head coach: Andy Avalos. Avalos was fired as head coach on Nov. 12, 2023, after only three seasons, compiling a 22-14 record. Avalos was a former BSU player and assistant coach who was hired to replace Bryan Harsin after the 2020 season.
BSU is a program with high standards and often competing at the national level, and a third straight season with at least four losses under Avalo’s charge was considered by many “not good enough.”
When addressing the press after the initial firing of Avalos, Athletic Director of BSU Jerimiah Dickey said, “Sunday was one of the toughest days of his career, saying he doesn’t like making changes during the season, but felt if the team was going to move forward, they needed a new direction right now.” The decision was not an easy one, but many coaches, fans and team members alike agreed with the tough decision to bring the team under new leadership.
As of now, Spencer Danielson, another former assistant coach at BSU, was appointed the head coach position after a three-week long period as interim head coach. During those three weeks, Danielson led the team to three consecutive wins and a Mountain West Conference Championship.
“I am extremely confident Spencer is an elite leader, a man of great substance and a rising star in the coaching profession who will lead Boise State football to a bright future,” Dickey said.
Although there are mixed emotions on campus, the BSU Football team under new leadership appears to have a bright outlook in their following seasons. Many believe the new head coach will lead the team to more wins and better morale for the team and fans.
