Want Apple Pie or Pumpkin Pie?

A battle of pies that could withstand time
Thanksgiving is always full of soul food and desserts. The famous apple and pumpkin pies always seem to make an appearance at the dinner table. This holiday season, there is a debate over which treat it just a little bit better than the other.

Apple and pumpkin pie have been fall classics ever since they were made. They are some of the world’s most well recognized pies, having everyone worldwide knowing about these pies. There has always been disagreement over these desserts though, which one is better? Let’s slice right into this mouthwatering debate.

Apple pie has been around since the 14th century or earlier. The origins of the pie have come from Asia as the apples are native from there. Over time, those apples soon found their ways to European countries and soon became a founding dish for Europeans. When Europeans came to America, they brought this dish with them. Soon, the dish became very popular within the United States and an icon of the 20th century.

According to backthenhistory.com, “It started when various publications began positioning apple pie as uniquely American around the turn of the [20th] century. In 1902, an editorial in The New York Times stated that pie had become ‘the American symbol for prosperity’ and that pie is the food of the heroic.”

Pumpkin pie has been around longer than apple pie in the history books. The pie was first created in central America in 5500 BC. It was one of the first dishes brought from the Americas to Europe. Again, when Europeans came to North America, they brought pie with them, and it became very popular with colonies like Massachusetts. Pumpkin pie also found its way into politics as many abolitionists’ favorite desert was pumpkin pie. It was mentioned in abolitionist books, and many anti-abolitionists stopped eating the pie all together.

According to bhg.com, pumpkin tops apple because, “It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without a slice of pumpkin pie.”

These pies are special in their own way. Celebrating a fall holiday or special occasion, pumpkin pie would be the fan favorite. But, if needing the taste of some old fashion comfort, apple pie would be the go-to.
